What are side channels?

Orkus's way:

  1. He doesn't use limiters almost at all, never on channels because cutting the spikes is bad in general. Sometimes he uses it on the master bus but only when it's reaaaaally necessary when it's all too saturated and he can hear that it's close to clipping.
  2. He puts every single sound in a different channel. He puts everything at 0 and then he raises first the sounds that take the biggest place in the EQ spectrum, which is bass and kick, but to -6dB max. He makes the bass approx. -2 dB in relation the kick. And then he starts adding the rest to it.
  3. He almost never uses compressor on drums which made me happy because I don't see much sense in using it on drums
  4. He said that spikes are not always a bad thing
  5. He also described the way he masters the mix to -1 max but I need to find what he was describing for AUM - he was talking about dark and light greens and the sound not sounding ok if it's too much in the light greens. It's a dynamic control which is not too good in AUM so I'll try to find a plugin for it. Or will use the limiter for this. Need to figure it out

He said that this is his way how he does it and everybody has their own. Well, I told him that his and Sibewest's sound are what I want to achieve so I want to know his way

But I don't know how about you. Nevertheless, these things make sense for me a lot because I was exacly asking myself - what's actually the sense of putting a limiter on each channel? What's the sense of compressing the drums? Etc. So I find these points very relieving and I feel like I know which way to go in my learning now

Should I use Barricade or the FabFilter limiter?

watch Hegi's video again!

  1. gainstaging (start at -6db)
  2. compression - can be only a slight reduction
  3. limiter at the end of the channel chain, cutting the spikes a little bit is ok if  there's no distortion
  4. limiter on master bus
